How does a cruise art auction work?
Fine art cruise auctions are exciting, high-energy informative events, and are often the highlight of cruise guests' vacations.
If you have never been on a cruise-ship before, the idea of an art auction on a cruise ship may seem somewhat foreign. However, many collectors look forward to purchasing artwork while on vacation. In fact, you'll often find that vacation destinations around the world typically have several art galleries in concentrated areas, as consumers tend to treat themselves while vacationing.
Many modern day cruise ships can rival some of the biggest and best luxury hotels in retail-heavy vacation destinations like Las Vegas and Atlantic City. In fact, several modern day cruise ships are actually longer than the Empire State building is tall! The ships are far from the connotations that may conjure up images of salty sailors and tugboats. In fact, the cruising industry itself is growing significantly year over year, and cruise ships are becoming more technologically advanced and loaded with attractions than ever before. Many cruise ships have a multitude of brand-name retail stores, ice skating rinks, golf courses, and more amenities than you could imagine. Some ships hold upwards of 5000 people - larger than many small towns.
The Art Department is given onboard retail gallery space to display artwork. Cruise guests are invited via in-cabin materials to attend a preview prior to the auction, where they can view the art work and ask questions of the Art Department. If a client is interested in the artwork it is tagged so that it can be brought out at auction. Guests interested in bidding register for the auction at which point information is collected to allow for efficient payment and shipping of any artwork purchased.
Onboard art auctioneers are available throughout the cruise to answer any questions guests may have before, during and after the auction, and can provide full descriptions and pricing information for every work offered.
